CHAPTER 9

Stella

With Ashton’s help, we get a ton of tasks checked off the to-do list. The tree is decorated, most of the props are ready, and all eleven pipers try on their costumes. I still have to alter a few, but we are in much better shape than this morning.

After an hour of rehearsal, I call ‘Cut’ for the night.

“Already?” Ashton asks, glancing at her watch. “We could run through one more time.”

“We’re good. Besides, it’s been a long day. Wes and I got here early this morning.”

“Did you now?” Ashton waggles her eyebrows and I slap her on the arm.

“Stop. It’s not like that.”

“Uh-huh. You can’t fool me, Stella. We’ve been friends for way too long. I see how you two stare at each other, how he teases you and you giggle and blush. If I didn’t know you, it would be aggravating, honestly.”

“I don’t do that,” I argue, gnawing on my lower lip. The very lip Wes kissed a few hours ago…

“Yeah, you do. I can’t believe it’s taken this long for the two of you to—you know…”

A hot flush creeps up my neck and I punch her arm again. “Shh! I don’t want Katie and Dec to hear.”

“Oh, my lips are sealed. And because he’s my brother, I don’t even want details. I just want the two of you to be happy. That’s all.”

Impulsively, I reach out and hug her. “Thanks, Ash.”

“Of course. Now I’m going to leave you to it…” Her voice trails off as we spot Wes walking in.

Two minutes later, Ashton and the kids are gone and it’s just me and Wes. Alone again.

“Ready?” he asks, leaning against the stage.

“Yes.”

Even though I’ve known Wes practically my entire life, something shifted between us today, and now my insides are buzzy with electricity and I’m hella nervous.

Relax. It’s Wes.

He links his large hand with mine and the last thing I can do right now is relax. Every cell in my body lights up brighter than the Snow Valley Christmas lights and my stomach flip-flops.

The drive home is quiet, save for the upbeat holiday music on the radio, and suddenly I’m uncertain how Wes feels about what happened this afternoon.

Maybe he’s changed his mind and wants to go back to the way things were.

The thought sends panic coursing through me.

“You okay?” Wes asks as he parks the car in my driveway.

“Mm-hmm,” I nod, gathering my stuff.

We walk up the steps and I unlock the door, freezing in the doorway.

“Wes,” I whisper, my hand flying to my mouth.

“I hope you don’t mind. I know you’ve been busy with the pageant. But I didn’t think it was right for the Queen of Christmas to not have a tree.”

Tears spring to my eyes as I stare at the most stunning Christmas tree, every bough strung with twinkly white lights, silver and gold ornaments perfectly placed. He’s also hung lights and garland on the fireplace mantle, and the entire room smells like fresh pine.

“Oh, don’t cry,” Wes says, pulling me into his broad chest.
