CHAPTER 9
Stella
With Ashtonâs help, we get a ton of tasks checked off the to-do list. The tree is decorated, most of the props are ready, and all eleven pipers try on their costumes. I still have to alter a few, but we are in much better shape than this morning.
After an hour of rehearsal, I call âCutâ for the night.
âAlready?â Ashton asks, glancing at her watch. âWe could run through one more time.â
âWeâre good. Besides, itâs been a long day. Wes and I got here early this morning.â
âDid you now?â Ashton waggles her eyebrows and I slap her on the arm.
âStop. Itâs not like that.â
âUh-huh. You canât fool me, Stella. Weâve been friends for way too long. I see how you two stare at each other, how he teases you and you giggle and blush. If I didnât know you, it would be aggravating, honestly.â
âI donât do that,â I argue, gnawing on my lower lip. The very lip Wes kissed a few hours agoâ¦
âYeah, you do. I canât believe itâs taken this long for the two of you toâyou knowâ¦â
A hot flush creeps up my neck and I punch her arm again. âShh! I donât want Katie and Dec to hear.â
âOh, my lips are sealed. And because heâs my brother, I donât even want details. I just want the two of you to be happy. Thatâs all.â
Impulsively, I reach out and hug her. âThanks, Ash.â
âOf course. Now Iâm going to leave you to itâ¦â Her voice trails off as we spot Wes walking in.
Two minutes later, Ashton and the kids are gone and itâs just me and Wes. Alone again.
âReady?â he asks, leaning against the stage.
âYes.â
Even though Iâve known Wes practically my entire life, something shifted between us today, and now my insides are buzzy with electricity and Iâm hella nervous.
Relax. Itâs Wes.
He links his large hand with mine and the last thing I can do right now is relax. Every cell in my body lights up brighter than the Snow Valley Christmas lights and my stomach flip-flops.
The drive home is quiet, save for the upbeat holiday music on the radio, and suddenly Iâm uncertain how Wes feels about what happened this afternoon.
Maybe heâs changed his mind and wants to go back to the way things were.
The thought sends panic coursing through me.
âYou okay?â Wes asks as he parks the car in my driveway.
âMm-hmm,â I nod, gathering my stuff.
We walk up the steps and I unlock the door, freezing in the doorway.
âWes,â I whisper, my hand flying to my mouth.
âI hope you donât mind. I know youâve been busy with the pageant. But I didnât think it was right for the Queen of Christmas to not have a tree.â
Tears spring to my eyes as I stare at the most stunning Christmas tree, every bough strung with twinkly white lights, silver and gold ornaments perfectly placed. Heâs also hung lights and garland on the fireplace mantle, and the entire room smells like fresh pine.
âOh, donât cry,â Wes says, pulling me into his broad chest.
